The Tea Party do love them some stories mixed with religion, and David Barton is one of their favorite story tellers. You need the religion piece to help instill fear and to use as a bat with which to beat people, so they believe the absolute garbage Barton feeds them. Unfortunately, presidential candidates such as the Newt, Michele (If I only had a brain)Bachmann, and Mike (White Boy)Huckabee are all listening to Barton and buying into his stories that ARE NOT history. I am starting to believe that we have a group of sociopaths running for president, or perhaps that is a requirement of the Tea Party–you have to be mad as a hatter. This guy is a total whack-job. Yet another Evangelical who would benefit from hermeneutics 101. To be fair, the Constitution does say “In the year of our Lord” so I guess that proves science AND historians wrong.
He is a total “whack-job,” as are the people that use him as an expert, a la Bachmann.
What a terrifying excuse for a human being. He reminds me a bit of our Matthew J. Franck without the intellectual pretensions. Why would anyone listen to this man (or anyone who listens to him)?
Yes, I suspect he and Franck are “friends” and I mean that only in a euphemistic “friend” way.
Franck really puzzles me. From what I’ve read, he either has a wonderfully gifted editor or is himself a talented wordsmith. He’s also incredibly gifted at defending his belief-system almost to the point where it doesn’t look like a rejection of contrary evidence. Almost.
Fortunately, when confronted with reality, Franck unravels quite easily and becomes Mr. Magoo. http://hulshofschmidt.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/wednesday-word-of-the-week-march-16/
