America’s Double-Standard on Affection

17 Oct

I’ve always known that Americans hold a serious double-standard on displays of affection. Straight couples can practically polish each other’s tonsils in public with minimal notice while two men holding hands raises an audible “EWW!” Even knowing this, however, it’s disappointing when something brings the point home dramatically.

I was visiting the Modern Family webpage (important to do when your husband is Fizbo) and looked at the discussion board. Wow. There are at least four threads (Kissing, Too Progressive, Modern Family, and Cam and Mitchell) that complain about the very brief kiss that Cam and Mitchell shared on the first episode of the second season. Lots of comments like “this isn’t an After School Special”, “we know they’re gay, isn’t that enough?”, and “don’t rub our noses in it.” The posters and commenters threaten ABC with drastically reduced ratings if they continue to push the >gasp of horror!< GAY AGENDA.

How sweet of the viewers to tolerate a gay couple on their funny show when the two men are only clowns and eunuchs. God forbid they be treated like every other character in this Modern family. I don’t want the ratings to go down, but if these idiots are going to be offended by human beings in love, they don’t deserve to watch the funniest show on television.

(P.S. – thanks to all the great people who posted reasonable responses in these threads. They kept my faith in humanity from completely eroding.)

Feel free to polish Robert’s tonsils in front of us anytime. I’d like to see how that’s done. I’m still trying to get John to hold my hand in public. However, I do agree with you and therefore have decided to be grossed out by ALL tonsil policing regardless of sex, gender or species. I’m both flip and serious. We have been totally desensitized to things that really should be private and then we get upset because it’s two guys; oh come on people-get real.

We can discuss over coffee. Can’t wait to see you!

Thanks for helping me make my point, Mo. You are very articulate and exactly right. I can live with a standard that seems a bit extreme as long as it’s consistent.

Can you post a link to the discussion board?

So I had to go back and re-watch it, as I missed ‘the kiss’ the first time around. OMG! Really? I think that I get more action from the dog when I give ’em a kiss (yes, I kiss my dogs on the mouth, I’m *that* person). It was ridiculously unobtrusive and inoffensive. Talk about a ridiculous thing to complain about.

These must be the same people that complained when Lucy was pregnant on ILL. I mean, after all, she and Ricky had only been married a few years. If she was pregnant, that meant that they must have **gasp** had the post marital sex!

Get a life and get your panties in a bunch about things that matter – like people who sneak an extra item in the 12 items or less line. Bastards… they are just standing there reading their people magazine and then plop it onto the rest of their items like we aren’t gonna notice!

Jennifer, You are such a wonderful human! As always, you show great compassion for others. Thank you for helping making the world a better place.

Yes, we will have to plan a strategy for those with more than 12 items! 🙂

I know, dear. It was a shock to us all to see those heterosexuals kissing like that on the tv. Lest we forget, some of our best friends are hetero. I know you think they chose that lifestyle, Brad but I think they were born that way.

Like Jen, I had to REWATCH “the” kiss! Really? Seriously? That is what people are complaining about? I OBVIOUSLY was not phased by it since I barely noticed it in the first place. These people have nothing better to do with their lives than complain on a discussion board. You would think fans of the show would be a little bit more open minded. Guess people are still stuck in the Stone Ages (No pun intended Michael).

Like Jen, there are far better things to complain about…like why Florence Hendersen is still on DTWS and just performed to the Brady Bunch theme song!

Michelle, I miss you so much! Like Jen, you are a tremendous human being!!!! I’m so fortunate to have you both as friends.

What is DTWS? Don’t dis our Florence now! I love yo, Scoopy!
