McDonald’s: Who Knew? Mayor McCheese is a Republican

3 Nov

Thanks to my friend Brad, for sharing this story.  While I’ve never liked McDonald’s to start with, my husband does.  I’m afraid we now have to add McDonald’s to our boycott list.  Here’s why: Ohio McDonald’s tells Employees to vote Republican if they want to continue receiving raises and benefits.  Nothing like being threatened as you go to the polls for democracy.  See the whole story here.

Before you boycott McDonalds and their incredibly tasty McDonald’s breakfast, keep in mind that they are franchised. This Ohio McDonald’s is its own independent entity.
Ray Croc’s (now deceased) widow was a truly selfless philanthropist (I recall her donating 25 high-end trailers anonymously to a trailer park in So Fla shortly after Hurricane Andrew – a reporter ultimately tracked down the donation and she refused to comment). A friend of mine volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House for two weeks every year and talks about the amazing experience and gift it is for children with cancer.
Boycott that Micky D’s, but keep in mind that some of them do some good.

Jen, yes, Ray Kroc’s widow was a great philanthropist. I loved how much money she donated to NPR, as well. However, it is difficult for me to forgive McDonald’s for their two to one donations to the Repuclican party. I believe The Ronald McDonald House is not run by Micky D’s, it is run by the Kroc foundation.

That is true, it is run by the Kroc Foundation, but all of their franchises are required to raise money for the Ronald McDonald house as well as to make a donation themselves. Individual franchises have more or less involvement.
Big Business supporting Republicans is simply them looking out for their own self-interest, which we all do and I cannot entirely begrudge them that. However, unlike certain other companies and organizations, they have not taken it upon themselves to actively attack other groups or stances that I support – i.e. the owner of Whole Foods, for example, has taken an active stance against the heath care bill.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that the world will be a worse place without mcDonald’s. In fact, I’m sure that all of our waist lines would be much trimmer. I just think that there are worse characters out there and it’s important to recognize when people are acting as individuals rather than representatives of entire group.
