My Son Is Gay: The Story of a Great Mom

6 Nov

Here’s a great essay by a mother whose son wanted to be Daphne (from Scooby Doo) for Halloween. Even though she was certain no-one would pick on a kid for his choice of costume, he was worried and, as it turns out, had reason to be. Her reaction to the situation and her unconditional support of her son is truly wonderful. Best line: “My job as his mother is not to stifle that man that he will be, but to help him along his way.” What a great mom!

What a wonderful Mother she is. Wouldn’t it be great if all Mothers were like that? My son is gay but I didn’t “get it” until he was in college. How much easier I could have made his life if I had known earlier. I’m sure he spent a lot of time hiding his true feelings and worrying about it. That makes me sad to think about. I can’t go back and fix anything. That’s in the past. I’ll just have to love him to pieces now!!!!! Thank God, he’s still here so that I can do that.

Cheryl, I have known you for over half my life. You are a tremendous mother! You have been so supportive of your son Brad and it has made all the difference in the world. What a great comment you made and I’m so glad that so many mothers are able to see what you wrote on this blog.
