As I continue to grow quite weary of the debate over DADT and gay marriage, the one question that sticks in my craw is: why do you get to decide what civil rights I’m allowed? I don’t really care if you approve or like people in the LGBTQ community, but that is not the point. The focus should be regardless of how you may feel, you don’t have the right to deny us homos the same civil rights everyone else in the United States is entitled to. I don’t care how you feel about gay marriage, but you don’t have the right to deny my husband and I the right to marry and if you do, then do we get to stop paying taxes? Your feelings about the LGBTQ community DON’T MATTER! You don’t have to be friends with us or like us, but you don’t have the right to kill, bully, deny us civil rights, deny us housing, deny us health care, or deny us employment. So, please feel free to hate as much as you like, but your hate does not allow you to dictate federal laws. For those of you that I hear saying, I just don’t know any gay folk, well pay attention! Is it safe for us to be visible?
Why do YOU get to decide what I’m allowed to have?

Who doesn’t know a gay person? In all likelihood, their friends/family members that are gay are just not revealing that fact to them because they know that their hate-filled and bigoted.
You stated it just right: you don’t have to *like* gay people, or women, or African Americans, or… whatever… However, they are entitled to the same rights as you.
If only we had more people like you, Jen! Thank goodness you are a teacher! Thank goodness you are a part of this blog! Your heart and generous soul reach thousands.
One of my favorite quotes “You`re Rights end where Mine begin”
This should and in my mind Does apply to the gay issues.
My Rights are no more or less important then anyone elses Gay or Not.
People should take that to heart and lose this ridiculous prejudice over peoples sexual orientation
William, thank you for contributing to the blog. You make a fantastic point! Again, I don’t care if you hate us or don’t approve of us, but you have absolutely NO right to deny us our basic civil rights. Thank you, again.
