Gun Control, Arizona, and Sarah Palin’s Target…

8 Jan

I started this post when I first got the NYT article that Congresswoman Giffords had been shot, close range.  The post took me much longer to write as I gathered more information and learned more disturbing news that makes my stomach churn and my heart ache.

Democratic Congresswoman Giffords was shot in the head.  I hope she will recover and send all good energy to her.  What makes my stomach churn is that Giffords was on Sarah Palin’s “Hit List,” for her support for the Healthcare bill.  I’m sure many of you remember the “Hit List” Palin made public with gun targets on people’s faces.  She later changed the gun targets to a different icon on the political hit list map.  I have nothing but contempt for Palin, and nothing but contempt for those that support this gun carrying lunatic.  Click here to see Palin’s “Hit List,” and the full article.

What is more disturbing is that this shooting might have been prevented had the gun control laws in Arizona remained.  Jan Brewer (who now has blood on her hands) on Friday signed into law a bill making Arizona the third state allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without requiring a permit.  Click here to see the full story.

Someone help me out here.  I am truly nonplussed at how we are creating a peaceful civilization with guns.  Not only am I pro-gun control, but I don’t understand why anyone in America needs to have a gun.  I understand that people hunt–I guess grocery stores are not everywhere.  Why do we as a culture put such value on carrying guns around, but we won’t allow gay marriage.  “Kill them, but mustn’t kiss them.”

For those of you that follow this blog, this is just a series of really fucked up events for the state of Arizona.  Progressives and Democrats, you are not safe.

This news story is so sad.
While I myself am not quite ‘anti-gun’ (probably a result of growing up in a gun owning household), I’m very much pro-gun control – far more than what we have today. I don’t understand why it’s easier to get a gun than it is to get a driver’s license. I find it abhorrent that while we strictly enforce drunk-driving laws (as we should), drinking and hunting go hand in hand – fire arms + alcohol = BAD PLAN! Gun locks, gun safes, background checks, safety classes, etc.
I know that you and I disagree on the issue of gun ownership, but we both agree that this tragedy (that so far has claimed the lives of 12 people) didn’t have ot happen.

Jen, nicely put. Yes, we may not agree about guns in general, nor do I expect the country to be gun free, (as I would wish) but the fact that Gov. Jan Brewer just signed a bill into law allowing people to carry concealed weapons in Arizona makes me ill. I do feel she has blood on her hands.

I only hope examples like this stick in the American hive mind until the 2012 elections. Power-hungry idiots and narrow-minded bigots like Palin, Brewer, Boehner, Issa, and their ilk are going to keep doing a lot of damage in the meantime.

Yes, let us hope the public will remember this tragedy in 2012. My heart is aching for those in Arizona right now, but I hope it will be a wake up call to the American people.
