Bigot of the Week Award: February 25

25 Feb

Bigot of the Week

I knew Mike (I appear to be sane) Huckabee would eventually earn at least one of these awards, but was hoping it would not be so soon in the year. Huckabee earns this week’s BWA after calling gay families, “guinea pigs”:

“I believe that we’re in denial about potential problems as we see more and more homosexual couples raising families. Essentially, these are experiments to see how well children will fare in such same-sex households. It will be years before we know whether or not our little guinea pigs turn out to be good at marriage and parenthood.”

Huckabee has made it clear that he will be running for President in 2012–he certainly is courting the gay vote with comments like the one above. Click here to see the full article on Jeremy’s blog. What make Huckabee so dangerous is that he does not appear as crazy as his peers in the Republican party. The bigot Huckabee goes on ad nauseam about how horrible marriage equality is and the evils of repealing DADT. He also says that, “[Marriage] is the foundational form of government,” Huckabee told CBS News.  Click here to see the full article. Once again, I would like to underscore that I don’t really care if people like the bigoted Huckabee like or dislike, approve or disapprove of the LGBT community. What I do care about is that people like Huckabee DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to deny us our civil rights! YOU DO NOT GET TO SAY WHAT I’M ALLOWED TO HAVE LEGALLY.

He has a lot of money behind him
Let’s hope ge keeps putting his foot in his mouth.
Unless someone is rabidly antigay( yes ther are many, idiots like that) they should find that ‘guinea pig’ statement offensive. I own a guinea pig. There is no such thing actually. They are not from Guinea and they are not pigs. They are sweet creatures from South America. They are rodents. He’s a

Someone should invite him to speak at a massive LGBT convention to listen to why they should vote for him.

So… government shouldn’t tell people how to raise their families… unless those people are gay, then they shouldn’t be allowed to have a family.

Finally, you understand it, Jen. I was getting worried about you and all your nonsense about people being treated equally.

That’s why I keep following your blog, so that you can set me straight! (pun intended)

OHHHHH! Ms. Lockett, are you and Lex hanging around each other? I fear he maybe rubbing off on you. 🙂

Wow. I’m actually surprised to hear something this backwards come from Huckabee. I probably disagree with 98% of hos politics, but I’ve always found him to be a generally likeable guy, despite his very conservative roots. Sad to see a potential presidential candidate still living in the past.

Cory, you do a marvelous job of pointing to what worries me most about Huckabee. He does, in deed, come off as an agreeable avuncular type of man, which makes him far more dangerous.

You know, I’m a little surprised that the National Father’s Rights Council isn’t going to get involved here as his discriminatory attitudes is directed *largely* (not entirely) at gay *men*. He’s not advocating that government go in and take babies from lesbians, but that gay couples shouldn’t be allowed to adopt (and adopting gay couples are largely men). He’s sticking to the stereotype that men cannot be nurturing or affective parents.

    • Michael Hulshof-Schmidt February 25, 2011 at 2:57 pm #

He clearly has never met me. At the risk of sounding immodest, I think I’m probably one of the most nurturing men around. Don’t make me get all Scott Walker on you and prove it! 🙂
