Celebrating Women’s History Month: March 2

Honoring Inez Haynes Irwin

Happy Birthday, Inez Haynes Irwin, also known as Inez Haynes Gillmore. Irwin was best known for her work as a social reformer, suffragist, and worker for women’s rights. Irwin was a member of the National Women’s Party. Irwin wrote over 40 books, her biography on the National Women’s Party, The Story of the Woman’s Party, is the one with which I’m most familiar. The Spring Flight, McCall’s, June 1924, won the O. Henry Award for 1924. Her fiction dealt frankly with feminist concerns and women’s social issues, including divorce, single parenthood and workplace issues. During this current assault on women in the United States, Irwin’s voice is sadly missed.
