Doesn’t Everyone Need a Gun at College?

Don't All College Students Need A Gun

Yes, Audience, we are back to Arizona and that madcap Jan Brewer. What better environment to carry a gun than a college campus? We all know how dangerous those institutions of higher learning are.  Reading Walt Whitman, Jane Austen, Alice Walker, and Plato’s Symposium is just an invitation to mayhem.  I am certain that Whitman would have made the guns for Ms. Celie and Elizabeth Bennett to have had their duel.  Why bother talking existentialism and the power of words and persuasion when you can simply take your gun out? In fact, we don’t need colleges and universities, when we simply subscribe to the age old maxim: Might is Right, thus proving there is nothing to separate us from the rest of the animal kingdom. In fact, we owe a debt of gratitude to the gun slinging Brewer and her gang, for proving that devolution does exist. On Thursday night, Arizona lawmakers gave their final approval for Senate Bill 1467, which allows guns on college campuses; it now awaits the Governor’s signature. Is anyone else as terrified as I am about this?  Is anyone paying attention?  Click here to see the full story.

Sadly, my state just passed a similar legislation and I am wholly against (although I’m personally not for an entire stripping of the second amendment). Having taught at Universities, i can tell you that having a student openly packing put a serious strain on my sense of security in the classroom. I taught for several years at a community college that had an ‘open enrollment,’ meaning that *anyone* can sign up for my class – even the mentally unstable and violent. I was threatened more than once (both my person and my property), but it never came to anything. The idea that those threats could have also been made with a gun?! Terrifying…

I know we disagree about gun control, but I would strongly encourage everyone to actually read the second amendment. It does not mean that individuals are guaranteed the right to own a gun, nor was it created for that purpose.

On that we are in agreement. I would even be inclined to say that the original goals of the second amendment have become out-dated and deserve re-examination. At the very least, it should be harder to get a gun than it is to get a driver’s license. And no one should be permitted to carry a gun around just for shits and giggles.

        I completely agree.
