Happy Birthday, Beverly Sills. Sills, known as “America’s Queen of Opera” was a name recognized by most living and breathing people, regardless of their knowledge of Opera. Sills was an icon. After her retirement in 1980, Sills went on to become the Chair of the Lincoln Center and of the Metropolitan Opera. She also devoted much of her energy to becoming an activist and champion for children with birth defects.
Here is Sills as Violetta, in La Traviata, this probably marks when I first fell in love with Sills–Oy! How did I not know I was gay. Click here to see, what may be considered, her most critically acclaimed performance ever.
