I need to thank my dear friend and LGBT ally, Tim Jung, for inspiring me to write this article. How sad and ironic that the openly gay Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, was the target of bigoted homophobic bullying during his tenure in the Obama administration.
Yes, the appointed Anti-Bullying Czar endured horrific bullying from the usual suspects. I am not going to dignify the LIEStold by the right wing bigots, but I will tell you that one of the terrorists among the bullies was Fox’s Sean Hannity who proved he has no conscience and told outright lies. The Hall of Shame also includes 53 Republicans who demanded that President Obama fire Jennings for “promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America’s schools—an agenda that runs counter to the values that many parents desire to instill in their children.” There is that Gay Agenda again–damn those gays for trying to make schools safe from bullies!
The bullying, or what more accurately should be called terrorism, became so intense that Federal Protective Services had to monitor the many death threats and advised him to assume that every time he went out, someone was following him. In reflecting on Fox and the right wing religious terrorists, Jennings said:
It was an awful experience, I’m not going to lie…There were moments when I wondered why anyone goes into public service in America.
Fortunately, his partner Jeff Davis told him, “You’ve spent your whole life fighting bullying. You’re not going to give in to bullies now.” Thank goodness, Jennings did not give in to the insane bullies, but what a sad commentary for American Politics and what passes for journalism. That word “news,” I don’t think that word means what Fox thinks it means. Let us hope Jenning’s replacement can continue the good work of creating safe schools for all students, not just the white, christian, heterosexual students. Click here to see the full article.
