Bigot of the Week Award: November 4, Mitt Romney

Bigot of the Week

Just when I thought I could not dislike Mitt Romney anymore than I already did, he makes a pathetic misogynistic move to earn my utter contempt.  This week, Romney told Faux News that he would support a  “personhood” constitutional amendment, thus earning him this week’s BWA.

For those TSM readers that are not already aware of how dangerous and misogynistic the proposed “personhood” idea is, allow me to explain.  The anti-woman, anti-choice folks are trying to give a fertilized human egg the status of a legal person, calling the egg “personhood”.  “Personhood” would also effectively ban IUDs, the morning-after pill, in-vitro fertilization, and all abortions; there are no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest or in cases where the life of a woman is at stake.  Basically, “personhood” would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Let us not forget the connection between misogyny and homophobia.  Romney is on record stating he is against marriage equality, civil unions, domestic partnerships, the repeal of DADT, and wants to use tax dollars to defend DOMA.  These are not the qualities for the leader of the “free” world.

Thanks for writing about this. I have to admit, Mitt Romney has me fairly confused. It seems to me that one moment I’ll hear him saying something I feel is fairly admirable (talking about equality, or something) and then minutes later I’ll hear him say something so misoginistinc that I can’t believe it’s the same person.

Yes, he is quite the media whore and flip flops on many issues. Sadly, he is consistent in his misogyny and homophobia.

True, true. I used to have this (relatively naieve) idea that because gay marriage became legal when he was governor he was capable of putting his misogyny and homophobia behind him if the majority of people wanted something to happen.

I defintely don’t have that idea anymore.

Sad he was unable to learn or grow and become a human being.

He’s pandering. I doubt Romney cares very much about abortion, as he was conveniently pro-choice when running for governor of Massachusetts, just as he is conveniently now in the opposite camp.

Calls for this ridiculous amendment have been on the Republican Party’s official platform since the 1980’s, and progress on its passage has been nonexistent. This is a situation where it is a blessing that amending the US Constitution is very difficult.

A more plausible threat to women’s rights generally and reproductive rights specifically would be if a Republican President was in a position to nominate the replacement for, say, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The margin on the Supreme Court is razor thin on these issues, one of many reasons that it is imperative that President Obama be reelected.

Jay, you point to two very good problems that Make Romney a scary choice. Yes, he is consistently The Panderer (Chaucer’s Pardoner) and demonstrates his categorical lack of integrity and moral fiber. He wants to be President because he wants the office, regardless of any intentions of serving the people of the U.S.

The second significant problem is that because of States’ Rights, many states will probably end up passing a “Personhood” amendment, thus denying all reproductive health care for women and abortions. It could be a matter of years before the Supreme Court would overturn each state’s decision, thus oppressing an already marginalized and vulnerable population.

      Great comment, Jay.
