Hero of the Week Award: December 23, Rachel Maddow

23 Dec

Thank you to my friend Jay for this week’s nomination for HWA.

Hero of the Week

I usually find Rachel Maddow both entertaining and informative, but her humor in how she exposes the hypocrisy of Sarah Palin and Fox News earns her this week’s HWA.

Palin and Fox news took umbrage to President Obama’s Christmas card and went down the very tired and worn out path of “the attack on Christmas.”  Maddow does a marvelous job of showing just how ludicrous these modern day Carnival folk are.

While it was a bit too Thomas Kinkade for my taste, I thought the image used in this year’s White House card was quite cheerful and warm, making Fox’s criticism of it particularly silly and unfair.

My favorite moment in this piece was the card from the Fox Business channel, which featured the cartoon of two foxes roasting the NBC peacock for an audience of sheep. A close second would be the Fox News card, depicting Fox winning a sled race, the competing networks being pulled by weird teams of sheep.

I can only conclude that Fox sees their viewers as sheep, whether they are watching in wondrous awe as Fox cooks their competition, or are pulling Fox to victory in the ratings race.

A savior is born, Hallelujah! What speaks to the Xmas traditions of faith, family and freedom better than defeating and eating the competition? Who could better shepherd the flock of sheep that is the American people than their savior, Fox News?

Even just the mention of Thomas Kinkade made me throw up a little in my mouth.

Yes, I love your observation of Fox’ audience being sheep. Yes, it makes the Baby Jesus cry with joy when he smells profits in the air!

Jay, thanks for this week’s Hero.

I recently discovered your blog, and have a question about it. Do you only attack the right, or are you able to find fault with the left?

The left/right media are equally ridiculous and honestly tiresome. Since independent reporting in apparently unachievable for large news orgs, we need to have both sides represented.

I shall answer your question in two ways: I have been publishing this blog for well over two years. The blog is focused on issues of social justice, regardless of political affiliation. Do I try to expose hypocrisy and the efforts to restrict civil rights? Yes. Is it mostly Republicans that are working to restrict civil rights–a resounding YES. You are certainly misguided if you truly believe that the media are anything but right wing puppets looking to earn profits.
