Methinks the Homophobes Protest Too Much…

10 Apr

...maybe it's even you.

Well fetch my smelling salts! A new study adds strong evidence that people who demonstrate the greatest antipathy toward LGBT people have strong same-sex attractions themselves. The research, which will be published the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, was conducted in the U.S. and U.K. and used four different experiments. The authors of the study note:

Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves… In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward.

Consider this the latest gospel in the Ted Haggard memorial bible of There But For the Grace…

While it’s easy to be smug about this further evidence that the bigots have some serious rainbow garments hiding in their closets, this study also goes to show that

  • as long as our government continues to create second-class status and separate-but-equal laws for LGBT citizens
  • as long as our schools refuse to take a strict stand against bullying and allow students to treat their peers as lesser people
  • as long as we allow “religious exemptions” to civil rights, giving bigotry the force of law

we continue to set up a world where far too many people believe that their own same-sex attractions are something to fear and hate. When that toxicity bubbles over, everyone suffers, especially those who are able to be happy with who they are. That irony must end. Let’s hope this new evidence finally moves our society to embrace all people equally and helps those with doubt to find the strength to love themselves so they can stop hating others.

Can I just say that I love the fact that what seemed to be common-sense truth before has been confirmed by social science? I’m going to wait and see what I think of their research methods before I start repeating this news myself, but this just thrills me. And explains so much about Rick Santorum (excessive focus on homosexual sex acts; hatred of women).

Didion, yes it seems like common sense to most thinking people. Fortunately, there is actually a great deal of science (research) regarding the correlation between homophobia and being gay. I just happened to pick a very recent piece of research.

Ahhh. The words “a great deal of research” just flows like honey over my soul. I’ve never looked into any of this research before and always wondered whether my complaints about homophobic politicians were justified. Ahhh.

I respect your opinions Didion. Do you think it would be helpful or just too much information if I do a series of blog entries siting other research models that have been done?

Honestly, I’d be fascinated by this — and to have links to the other research. You have a highly intelligent reader fan base and I’m sure many of them would geek out on the issues, like I would. Like me, a lot of people have informally suspected that facts like this might be true, but didn’t realize that social scientists were out there exploring the questions. Why, you’d be doing us a public service!

That’s my opinion, anyway. I wonder if other regular readers would like to weigh in?

I am such a geek myself, I would so enjoy publishing and commenting on all of the research corroborating the thesis that the more homophobic people are, the more it is they are in fact gay.

Great article Michael! This research reminds me of another one from a year or so ago. It was a study that showed that homophobic men were more aroused by gay porn than straight or lesbian.

On a side note, here is a nominee for Bigot of the Week:

Found another! More hate for women:

I love every time on of these studies come out. I think of the cruelty and pain I have suffered at the hands of homophobes. At the end of the day I feel sorry for them. They are walking the earth full of hatred for themselves, their souls in torment, and my life may not be perfect, but have more peace then they will ever have.
