This week yet another Republican forgot his talking points and actually said what he meant. Thanks to my friend Jennifer Carey for pointing out this easy winner of this week’s BWA. Tea Party favorite Richard Mourdock unseated long-time Indiana Republican Senator Dick Lugar in this year’s primaries. In the debate for the Senate race on Monday, Mourdock — currently the state Treasurer — was asked about abortion and came up with this astounding answer.
Life is that gift from God that I think even if life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.
That’s right, folks, if a woman is raped and discovers she is pregnant, she should just smile and know that she’s carrying a gift from God. Now that’s some compassionate conservatism! I wonder if some intelligent person cut Mourdock’s penis off, would we just saythat God intended that to happen?
Mourdock is just the latest in a series of Republicans who forgot to dissemble when asked about abortion and rape. Todd Akin and Linda McMahon have both put their electoral hopes on the skids with their spouting off. Let’s hope that Mourdock has done the same and that the extremist nominees put forward by the Teahadists dash any chances the GOP had of taking the Senate in November.
Dishonorable mention goes to the great dissembler himself, Mitt Romney. The Mittbot had just released a 30-second spot endorsing Mourdock before the debate. This is the only Senate race in which Romney has so actively inserted himself. Faced with Mourdock’s comments, Romney issued a bland “I disagree” and has since gone silent; he has not, however pulled the ads. Which is it Mitt?
*sighs* When will this be over?
It is truly sad and pathetic how these group of men have no sense of human decency when they talk about women and about rape.
I know a lot of men don’t like it that I think they should stay out of the abortion debate but I feel like as soon as you add rape to the abortion debate then you are REALLY crossing a line! Both issues are sadly close to my heart.
We need more men to speak up and step up. The more we support women the stronger all of humanity is.
Exactly! I wonder when this will all click in?
Hopefully in a week and a half!
That’s what I’m hoping too!
He later went on to state that God didn’t want rape, but then that’s just non-sensical. If this life wasn’t part of God’s plan, then how was the rape not part of God’s plan? According to this man, God intends for women to be raped, carry that child to term, and then suffer the burdens of single motherhood (looking at the face of your attacker every day) or the extreme pain of giving up your child. I hate to believe that God intends for his children to experience such extreme and life-long suffering.
Mourdock’s God is cruel indeed if this his how he intends his plans to come to fruition.
Jen,
I think I usually get quite nervous when (usually) men start talking about what God wants or says. Thank you for inspiring me to write this story.
I must wonder what causes these men on the extreme right to be such an expert on the issue of rape. Have they, perhaps, ever raped someone or maybe they have been raped themselves. Rape is not a subject that needs to be defined in multiple ways and considered a “gift from God”. Rape is an invasive and horrifying act that is committed by those that have no courage or compassion. For someone to act like it is not a big deal, let me just say that….yes it is a very big deal. And it is something that happens to both the ladies and the men. Believe me when I say this. I know whereof i speak!
Tom,
Thank you for sharing personal experience. Yes, I do believe these men are completely out of touch with the real world and what rape means.
The man is an idiot!
Even sadder than him being an idiot is that people are supporting his views.
Did you see the colbert report clip on this. It will at least make you smile in these dark times.
