Associated Press: An Apology For Hillary ?

29 Aug

clinton-foundationHow sad and disheartening that the Associated Press (AP) has devolved to the likes of Fox News, where one can “report” a series of lies and present it as news. What is even more profoundly disturbing is that when confronted with the fact that they the AP had no evidence of wrong doing and should offer a retraction, they took a very petulant “I got my hand caught in the cookie jar”defense. Is the AP trying to model itself off of the behavior of Trump?

For those not familiar with the story, some brief background. Last week the AP pitched a story that screamed “Half of the people Hillary Clinton met with as Secretary of State were Clinton Foundation donors!!” The problem? They only looked at two years of her time as Secretary of State. They threw out every meeting she had with anyone they considered a “government official.” Left with 154 PRIVATE CITIZEN meetings (out of over 7000), it’s a wonder that only 85 turned out to be donors to a major philanthropic organization. When major news outlets — including professional Clinton basher the New York Times — called them out and asked for details, the AP refused.

Honestly, I was embarrassed for Stephen Braun and Eileen Sullivan of the AP. Their claims and allegations are not only unfounded but read as though it is a parody from The Onion: “Secretary of State Clinton talked to very important people and even took money for her foundation.” Really? Is it that far of a stretch to think that high profile people talk to other high profile people and ask them for money for a foundation–and by the way, The Clinton Foundation helps to provide medication for more than half of all adults and 75% of children impacted by HIV/AIDS world wide, not insignificant.

In fact, if you take the time to comb through Braun and Sullivan’s article, you will see they have zero evidence to corroborate any wrongdoing on the part of Hillary Clinton. Sadly, when faced with this subterfuge by Braun and Sullivan last Tuesday, they have offered no apology, no repair, and in fact have approached the debacle in a very Trumpian manner.  Perhaps, they are trying to build a wall around Hillary and they will force her grandson Aidan to pay for it? Journalism requires honesty and transparency. How sad that the AP instead opted for innuendo and smear tactics, picking “facts” to prove a flawed thesis.

What is of great concern is that the AP article reads like a bunch of anti-Hillary bumper stickers. There seems to be great intent on behalf of Braun and Sullivan to deliver talking points without any substance, an approach we have seen used by the likes of Fox News. Yes, I admit, it is a low blow to be compared to Fox, and that is where you are now AP (in my best, “but y’are Blanche, y’are!” voice). When did AP start to stand for Appalling Practices?

AP has meant “Appalling Practices” for several years, but more and more people are starting to take note as this article shows:–Something-Has-Gone-Badly-Wrong-at-the-AP An AP article this morning about the $400 million going to Iran began by stating that this action “may have no precedent” and finished with a precedent. It’s obvious that an article is from AP by its biased content.

The press has been getting lazy by just regurgitating leaked information without doing their due diligence and fact checking.

HRC email is one example of this…because the press is lazy, they missed the bigger picture. The State Department government server that she was required to use for non classified material has been subject to major cyber attacks by Russia.

If GAO were to do an audit of the gov server for 2014 and 2015, the results would be the same as what they found for HRC. There appears to be a systemic problem.

I actually have redflagged AP for a long time now. There has been something nefarious going on over there

Thank you for another insightful post. It feel like the AP may have inadvertently disrupted the infamous “Clintion Rule” practice with their slipshod approach to this story. Even CNN – usually willing to go for sensation over substance – calls them out!

I’m glad to see that other major media like CNN calling out the bad behavior of the AP. Thank you for commenting and for providing the link. Peace, Michael.

Here is an interesting piece comparing treatment of the Clinton Foundation with Colin Powell’s Foundation, run by his wife while he was Secretary of State. Lots worth investigating, but the press never asked.

But for Clinton they jumped into the investigation with glee and came up with (I quote Vox here.)

*An Associated Press investigation whose big reveal is that Clinton once tried to help out a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was in hot water with the ruling party of his home country.
*An LA Times story headlined “Billionaire’s Clinton Ties Face Scrutiny,” about a rich Lebanese-Nigerian man who appears to be genuinely somewhat shady, gave money to the Clinton Foundation, and received nothing in exchange.
*A Wall Street Journal story about how the crown prince of Bahrain scored a meeting with Hillary Clinton years after having donated to the Clinton Foundation. The story somehow forgets to mention that Rice, Powell, Madeleine Albright, and Warren Christopher had all also met with him during their tenures as secretary of state
*An ABC investigation that concluded a donor had used a foundation connection to get a better seating assignment at State Department function.

Three of these stories, in other words, found no wrongdoing whatsoever but chose to insinuate that they had found wrongdoing in order to make the stories seem more interesting. The AP even teased its story with a flagrantly inaccurate tweet, which it now concedes was inaccurate but won’t take down or correct. The final investigation into the seat assignments at least came up with something, but it’s got to be just about the most trivial piece of donor special treatment you can think of. ”

The Trump campaign is throwing whatever they think will stick up against the wall. The press like AP eats it up because they always treat Clinton as corrupt and assign bad motives to every thing she ever says or does. And she doesn’t have her a pet news network like FOX to get her message out nor does she paper their sources with cease and desist orders.

Here is that wonderful article where a Clinton reporter admits the unstated rules for reporting on Clinton. It’s a must read. AP was just doing business as usual. The problem is that most of Clinton’s voters in the primary were women and minorities who could be safely ignored. Now there are millions of readers who are starting to catch on to the press sleaze. So maybe, just maybe the frankly sexists coverage of Clinton will get more attention.
