From Russia with Love (?)

jews-must-register-or-face-deportation-ukraine-russia-donetsk-leafletGiven all of the vicious homophobia of Russia and its self-proclaimed Tsar, Vladimr Putin, along with the recent annexation of Crimea and the long-established regional history of misogyny and anti-Semitism, I’m starting to get a bit worried about a possible resurrection of a new USSR.

Last week I learned that following Pesach services a group of masked men (hard not to make a link to the KKK here) were delivering leaflets that instructed Jews to register with the city of Donetsk.  Jews were told they had to register to prove their citizenship and provide a list of all of their assets.  Am I the only one freaking out about this? Is anyone else thinking about Nazi Germany or the old Russian pogroms?

Despite the clear impression they intended to give, the masked bigots were not actually representing the Ukrainian government or the city of Donetsk.  They seem to represent a fringe right-wing group of bigots. Sadly, I can only imagine the trauma caused to these people coming out of the synagogue.

The tensions mounting in the Ukraine are unsettling at best. I struggle with how humans can make space for creating communities to thrive, and how do we prevent communities from being taken over and governed by an autocrat? Certainly, Putin has not been a friend to the Jewish community or the LGBT community. Now with his increased military presence in eastern Ukraine, this is feeling similar to Uncle Joe Stalin’s way of governing.

Cousin Vlad has made stirring speeches referring to “Tsarist borders” for Russia. Given the Crimean annexation, that should be terrifying for anyone paying attention. Do those borders include Latvia? Lithuania? Poland? Finland? Does the simple weight of historical maps trump over a century of evolving national identities, diplomacy, and binding international agreements? Putin seems to think himself a law unto himself. If he gets a nationalist surge behind him, where will it end?

By no means am I encouraging or endorsing we entrench ourselves in yet another war, but I wonder if it would be helpful for NATO to take a strong stand against Putin? The weight of history around how humans treat Jews and gays is very scary for me and I wonder with sadness, have these militants never read a history book?

The R- Word and other Unacceptable Words

26 May

A few months ago, an acquaintance of mine was telling a small group of us a story about a horrible day she had while working at the Waffle House.  While telling the story she made fun of a woman she worked with and used the R-word.  She referred to the woman, who could not even pronounce waffle, as a “retard.”  I must confess my jaw dropped with disgust, as did the jaws of the small group of friends I was with at the time.  Having taught kids with special needs for several years, I was so personally offended by her story.  Here is where I wish I had had more patience, but rather I just stopped listening to her and walked away–not very generous of me.

My friend Shawn shared a video with me, actually a PSA done by the amazing out lesbian Jane Lynch.  The PSA does a tremendous job of sending the message that we all need to engage in stopping discrimination.  I look back now and realize I should have stopped the woman telling her story about the Waffle House and I should have kindly let her know how inappropriate her story was, rather than walking away and dismissing her. Bigot of the Week Award: May 13

Bigot of the Week

This week’s bigot would be completely comical if she did not have a chance at becoming an elected official in Jacksonville, Florida. Kimberly Daniels, perhaps TSM’s biggest ball of crazy yet, earns this week’s BWA.  Aside from receiving an endorsement from the Family Research Council (FRC), a recognized hate group, Daniels has spoken out against the LGBTQ community, Jews, and Africans.  Daniels reports:

Africans are especially prone to sex with demons, and that this can result in a special sort of demonic pregnancy…(she reports) having performed a “spiritual abortion” on “satan’s baby.

My, she is a busy gal. How does one abort Satan’s baby?  Does this mean she is pro-choice?  This does seem to show that we need to support Planned Parenthood, or was there just one baby spawned by Satan?  I just have so many questions as to what one does about the spawn of Satan.

No surprise, she has also said some incredibly hateful things about the LGBTQ community:

We pray that all infiltration of legislation for the positive support of the homosexual agenda will be pulled down in the Spirit and manifested in the the outcome of the laws. We defy every organization of the antichrist spirit…I come against the vision of the rainbow that represented a covenant between the devil and me. I even break the power of the words that I spoke in secret to cage the souls of innocent people and to pull them into the lifestyle… I renounce masturbation and break all familial spirits and generational curses.

Daniels and our Christine O’Donnell have a great deal in common and it seems that Daniels is fighting her own internalized homophobia.  Am I the only one that feels like I’m watching really bad episodes of the Jerry Springer show?  The level of CRAZY seems to have gone off the charts for the Republicans in the United States.  Do you suppose they chose the elephant as their symbol because they knew beforehand they would become the Carnival/Circus party?

Glenn Beck/Mel Gibson: Twins Separated at Birth

Twins Separated

I have tried very hard NOT to do any more stories on the racist bigot, Glenn Beck, thus abiding by the Bachmann Line.  However, when I saw this article in ReadersSupportedNews, I had to make a comment.  His anti-semitism has gone too far.  Beck’s venom on Jews, gays, and anyone t

hat does not agree with him, reminds me of the “white boy” tantrums of Mel Gibson. How bizarre that NBC let Keith Olbermann go, but Fau

x News has opted to retain Beck.  This last incident pushed me over the edge with Beck. On Holocaust Remembrance Day,  400 rabbis representing all four branches of American Judaism took out an ad demanding that Beck be sanctioned for what quotations in the ad called his “monstrous” and “beyond repugnant” use of anti-Semitic imagery in going after Holocaust survivor George Soros.

On July 13, Beck told his Fox viewers: “Jesus conquered death. He wasn’t victimized. … If he was a victim, and this theology was true, then Jesus would have come back from the dead and made the Jews pay for what they did.”  Really?  Really? Beck is paid by Faux News to spread this kind of hate?  This tirade sounds like something right out of Mel Gibson’s drunken mouth.

Beck also promoted on air the work of a Nazi sympathizer, Elizabeth Dilling, who had, in writings Beck didn’t mention, referred to Dwight D. Eisenhower with a particularly vile anti-Semitic slur.  How does this man have a job?  What is next? Will we see him on Faux News wearing his KKK hood?   Click here to see the full article.
