The R- Word and other Unacceptable Words

26 May

A few months ago, an acquaintance of mine was telling a small group of us a story about a horrible day she had while working at the Waffle House.  While telling the story she made fun of a woman she worked with and used the R-word.  She referred to the woman, who could not even pronounce waffle, as a “retard.”  I must confess my jaw dropped with disgust, as did the jaws of the small group of friends I was with at the time.  Having taught kids with special needs for several years, I was so personally offended by her story.  Here is where I wish I had had more patience, but rather I just stopped listening to her and walked away–not very generous of me.

My friend Shawn shared a video with me, actually a PSA done by the amazing out lesbian Jane Lynch.  The PSA does a tremendous job of sending the message that we all need to engage in stopping discrimination.  I look back now and realize I should have stopped the woman telling her story about the Waffle House and I should have kindly let her know how inappropriate her story was, rather than walking away and dismissing her. Bigot of the Week Award: April 15

15 Apr

Bigot of the Week

Obviously, Kobe the Homophobic Bigot Bryant earns a dishonorable mention this week.  Stay tuned to read about the reaction from Nike and if they will keep the Bigoted Bryant as a spokesperson for their products.

This week’s BWA, however, goes to Bret Easton Ellis.  Some of you may remember Ellis as the writer of American Psycho and Less Than Zero. Ellis’ comments were particularly cruel and venomous. Here are some of the unforgivable comments made by the washed-up has-been writer:

I like the idea of Glee but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I’ve stepped into a puddle of HIV?

This comment alone is so offensive on so many fronts.  The blatant homophobia combined with the disgusting discrimination against those battling HIV is nothing less than sociopathic. (Click here to see the first source).  The self-identifying bisexual Ellis then followed with several TweetsNot to bum everyone out, but can we get a reality check here? It gets worse. The next tweet, pushes this pacifist to want to have Ellis committed to a psychiatric ward:

No, I wasn’t drunk last night. I was watching Chris Colfer singing, um, “Le Jazz Hot” and I felt like I had suddenly come down with the hivs.

Regardless if Ellis is just doing this to get some attention because he is no longer in the spotlight, this type of homophobic and discriminatory/inflammatory language shows some significant pathology. American Psycho indeed.

More on Scalia and Captain Owen Honors…

4 Jan

As I have been reading different blogs today and different newspapers, I have been nonplussed by the number of people coming to the defense of Captain Honors and further bemused by the number of people that have sent me private messages regarding my post on Scalia today.  One such private response informed me that, “Scalia was doing God’s work.”  Really?  Who knew god was such a hater.  As for Honors (talk about irony), I don’t care what he does in the privacy of his own home, but as a leader he has no right to behave in a sophomoric, homophobic, and misogynistic way.  For those of you defending him, REALLY?  You don’t expect more from leaders?  I suspect Scalia, the leader of the Fecal Five, will be watching these short videos with GLEE.
