Women’s History Month 2013: Ashley Judd

11 Mar

Ashley-JuddToday we honor and celebrate a powerful woman who embraces the term feminist and stands strong against double standards. Ashley Tyler Ciminella was born in California in 1968 to Naomi and Michael Ciminella. By the time she was in school, her parents had split and her mother took her and her half-sister Wynonna back to her home in Kentucky. The girls were raised with their mother’s birth name, Judd.

Ashley attended a number of schools, graduated, and went to the University of Kentucky. She studied French and women’s studies, including a semester abroad, while she began to develop an interest in acting. Rather than graduating with her class, she drove to L.A. and worked as a waitress while she looked for acting jobs. She found some television work (including a stint on Sisters opposite Swoosie Kurtz) and quickly picked up movie roles. She has worked steadily as an actor for two decades.

During that time, she developed a passion for activism and civil rights. She is an active member of the Board of YouthAIDS. In her travels for that organization she became increasingly aware of the global problems of poverty and has worked tirelessly to engage with organizations and leaders dedicated to broad political and social change. She has worked with Women for Women International and Equality Now and in 2011 joined the Leadership Council of the International Center for Research on Women.

Fully aware of how Hollywood treats older actresses, she also continued her formal education, receiving a a Master in Public Administration degree (MPA) from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2010. As a well-known celebrity with strong opinions, Judd has frequently come under fire by the Right and the press. She takes what comes and fires back, brilliantly using any attacks as an opportunity to expose hypocrisy and patriarchy.

Judd has indicated some interest in running for the U.S. Senate; she would oppose Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R – KY) in the 2014 election if she runs. The Teahadists are so afraid of her strong, smart presence that they’ve already started the attacks. Karl Rove is running context-free quotes in ads that slam her as an “out-of-touch Hollywood elitist”–elitist theatre, white power and privileged, sounds like Rand Paul to me. Conservative e-rag Daily Caller ran an ugly piece attacking her for having nude scenes in some of her movies. (Strange that Scott Brown’s centerfold spread didn’t seem to matter to them…)

Judd takes it all in stride, simply repeating that she is a feminist and a progressive and that her values translate well to what the people of Kentucky need.  Given the hollow grandstanding exhibited by McConnell’s junior counterpart, Rand Paul, someone with real values and a dedication to justice would be a welcome addition. The idea of a Sen. Judd joining Sens. Gillibrand, Warren, and Baldwin is pretty exciting.

No matter what she chooses to do next, we can count on Ashley Judd to stand up for women and for the marginalized everywhere.

Number 5 Bigot of the Year 2012: Mike Huckabee

27 Dec
Number 5 Bigot of 2012

Number 5 Bigot of 2012

Let’s start this year’s Bigot of the Year awards with a big thank you to all the readers who submitted nominations. We had nearly 20 well-qualified horrors make the short list, many with multiple recommendations. After careful consideration, TSM is ready to roll out the bottom five! I’ve paid special attention to those people and organizations with significant power, privilege, and influence and abuse it to oppress their fellow human beings.

At number 5, we have one of the newest entrants into Hate Radio. Since leaving the Arkansas governor’s mansion in 2007, Mike Huckabee has been a thorn in reasonable America’s side. A bloviating gasbag of toxic opinions, he has flirted with other political aspirations, always deciding instead to earn big bucks for spewing bile and demeaning as many groups of Americans as possible. In less than a year on the air with his own show, Huckabee has been the go-to place for certified hate groups like the Family Research Council to peddle their noxious ideas and work to sustain a white hetero supremacist paradigm.

Huckabee has plenty of those on his own as well. He was the creator of Chik-Fil-A Day, rewarding the sawdust sandwich empire for its homophobia and anti-equality stands. He lashed into  President Obama for supporting marriage equality. He was an early supporter of Todd Akin after his horrific rape comments. He loves to blame the LGBT community for every disaster that strikes. Pushing him over the top of his fellow “personalities” were his comments in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy. Huckabee was the first and loudest to propose that school prayer and teaching “intelligent design” would have prevented the shootings. What a charm-free ball of crazy!

Dishonorable mention at #5 goes to five old straight white guys who burned up huge amounts of money trying to meddle with this year’s elections. Karl “0% Success Rate” Rove, Sheldon “It’s MY Money” Adelson, David and Charles “Pour the Tea” Koch, and Donald “Birther #1”  Racist Trump poured hundreds of millions of dollars into post-Citizens United Super PACs, pushing the farthest right agendas. Perhaps we should be grateful that they proved that even that much money can’t buy success, but just imagine all the good they could have done if they had invested in social justice rather than selfish arrogance…

Hero of the Week Award: November 9, American Voters

9 Nov

Hero of the Week

Despite the billions of (often anonymous–thank you Citizens United) dollars poured into this year’s elections, democracy prevailed. It did so largely because millions of people participated in the democratic process, voting their hearts and consciences despite the bleating ads and cynical lies.

The racist and oppressive attempts to intimidate voters and suppress turnout had a splendidly ironic effect. Turnout — especially for early voting — was high and the minority communities targeted specifically refuted the attempts. Many exit polls indicated that Latino and African American voters specifically made the effort to vote — even when disenchanted by their choices — to reinforce their constitutional right to vote in the face of efforts to disenfranchise them. Almost without exception, these voters repudiated the Tea Party right and supported the President. While the final outcome might not have changed, results in Ohio, Virginia, and Florida (at least) were helped enormously by this turnout.

And what a result! Not only did the Tea Party suffer major defeats (Goodbye, Reps. Walsh and West!) but the overall results were progressive. The new Senators are almost universally to the left of the people they replace, including wonderful people-powered winners like Tammy Baldwin and Elizabeth Warren. Women repudiated the Republican attacks on their minds and bodies, demonstrating a gender gap and voting power never seen before. Thanks in part to the President’s bold leadership, gay rights — which should never be put to a vote but sadly still are — saw unprecedented victories with marriage equality ruling the day.

Karl Rove, the Koch brothers, and Citizens United poured huge sums of money into this election. They lost the top of the ticket, failed to take the Senate, and lost ground in the House. Ballot measures around the county routinely favored the people over corporate power and greed. We have a long way to go, and the President — despite his mandate — has a hostile House to contend with, but the message is clear and the direction is sound.  I am enormously relieved to see that a platform of hate and marginalization of so many people failed!

20 Million Dollars to Attack Democrats This Summer

27 Jul

Tragic Piece of Work

While brushing my teeth this morning, (lest we forget the dental hygiene ritual as part of the Gay Agenda) I saw a horrific commercial on the television attacking my congressman Kurt Schrader. The spin on reality and the specious arguments being made were enough to make me spit up. I’m left wondering if people really believe this garbage.

Crossroads, the conservative anonymous-money giant, also known as Karl Rove’s political action committee, has spent $20 million for a summer attack on Democrats to control the political dialogue in the country.  Yes, the spin doctor is at work again.  One of those democrats being attacked is Kurt Schrader. While we talk about raising the debt ceiling and about unemployment, social security, and medicare, big money Republicans are spending 20 million to spread lies and instill fear in the hearts of the American people.  Does this tactic sound familiar?  Remember “The War on Terrorism” and “The Gays Attacking America”? Rove and Cheney helped move the country into a state of Fascism.  If you did not support W. and the war in Iraq, you were called unpatriotic. Now we see Rove using the current budget crisis to use fear again.  Rather ironic, given the architects of the current budget crisis were those in the George W. administration.  Am I the only one that thinks Rove is a complete sociopath?

The commercials accuse Democrats of “out of control” spending and refusing to exercise restraint.  The reality is that Schrader voted against extending the tax cuts enacted by former-President Bush and he has returned $180,000 in unused funds from his own congressional account.  He has also been an outspoken critic of government spending. Exactly how are our elected officials to be responsible stewards of tax dollars when they refuse to increase taxes on corporations and on the top 2% of the  richest Americans?

There does not seem to be a lot of room for negotiating when Republicans say they refuse to look at increasing taxes and then blame the President for doing what they have instructed him to do.  Let us remember that increasing the debt ceiling does not allow for more spending, but it only makes it possible to pay the debts that have already been agreed upon, by both parties, to pay. I hope the American people have grown tired of scapegoating women and the LGBT communities. Please tell me that the absurd lies being told by Crossroads/Karl Rove are not being consumed by the public at large.

Wisconsin and Workers For Sale…

11 Mar

Karl Rove: Damn Those Teachers and Laborers

At this point, everyone who is paying attention is aware that the Koch Brothers are spending a fortune to oppress the workers of Wisconsin as they pay to bus in supporters for Scott Walker.  Now, we also have to worry about more corporate money supporting the sell out of Wisconsin. Karl Rove announced that he would spend $750,000 in corporate money bashing unions and supporting Governor Walker and the Wisconsin Republicans. You just had to know that Rove would rear his ugly head in all of this. I’m just waiting for Clarence Thomas to make an appearance in Wisconsin spitting on the workers and then demanding an apology from them. The good news is we can do something. We can support a recall of these greedy Republicans. Click here to take action.
