David Brooks: Raising Money For Homophobia

30 Sep

David BrooksNew York Times contributor David Brooks has decided to give the keynote address for a right wing Christian money maker called The Gathering. I admit I have never been a fan of Brooks.  While at times he is able to almost contain his arrogance and white privilege when he does his occasional spot with E.J. Dionne on NPR, his white, heteronormative, misogyny ekes out, as we saw in his book The Social Animal.

The Gathering is not some ecumenical group. The Gathering is more of a collection of white, right wing “Christians” that raise money to proselytize, which might not be so bad, save that much of the money they raise goes specifically to hate groups that target LGBT organizations.  The Gathering has funded over 125 anti-gay organizations and ministries. This money includes funding such violently hateful groups such as Uganda and its anti-gay bill. Not a big surprise, but much of the money raised also goes to such nefarious hate groups such as the the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research Council, both of whom have been recognized as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The irony is that Brooks purports to be in favor of same-sex marriage, a stand which clearly does not preclude violent homophobia. While I have never thought of Brooks as a self-aware human being, I am nonplussed by his decision to be the keynote speaker for an organization that does so much harm. I am also sad and confused as to why this is not getting more media coverage. Is it because there is a tacit agreement in major media that it is okay to be homophobic? Is Brooks the teflon man as so many Republicans are?

LGBT Pride and History Month 2014: Thank You Justice Kennedy

5 Jun

Official Photograph of Justice Anthony KennedyOnce again those merry pranksters at the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) tried their best to crush equality for loving same-sex couples. Shortly after federal Judge Michael McShane issued a strong ruling striking down Oregon’s ban on marriage equality for same sex couples, NOM tried to intervene.

NOM demanded that the Supreme Court issue a stay on McShane’s ruling while they desperately scrambled to find a way to reverse it. The petition went to Justice Anthony Kennedy, who presides over such matters for the region that includes Oregon. Kennedy requested briefs from NOM, the plaintiffs who won McShane’s decision and the state of Oregon. After those briefs were filed on Tuesday, the Justice referred the matter to the entire Supreme Court.

The full Court responded with a clear “go away!” message to NOM.

The application for  stay presented to Justice Kennedy and by him referred to the Court is denied.

It’s that simple. NOM doesn’t get any legal justifications or consideration. Just one sentence that rejects and rebukes their tragic, hateful energy.

Congratulations to Justice Kennedy for getting the weight of the Court behind this matter and to the assembled Justices for standing up for equality. Every once in awhile the Supreme Court gets things right — what a lovely example this is!

Thanks also to Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum. She carefully analyzed the case before McShane and correctly decided that Oregon’s ban was unconstitutional “under any level of scrutiny.” Refusing to waste taxpayer money defending injustice, she did not defend the ban. When replying to Justice Kennedy’s request for briefs, she made it quite clear that NOM and its anonymous three Oregon citizens did not have the right to assume the power of state government. Thank you, AG Rosenblum! How sad that NOM continues to leave a legacy of hate and is on the wrong side of history.  Thank you to the strong LGBT voices and the strong voices of our allies.

Call to Action: Now we must not rest. We must look at ways in which each of our voices can be supportive of LGBT people here in the United States and all over the world.

Clutch Your Pearls: A Gay Caveman

Gay Caveman

Thank you to my friends Jennifer Lockett and Charlie Scott for sharing this great article with me. For all of the idiots and bigots that think homosexuality is a choice and something new, we now have more evidence that homosexuality has been around since the dawn of time. Sorry NOM. Archeologists believe they have found the 5,000 year old remains of one of the earlier homo sapiens. A skeleton from the Copper Age was found in the Czech Republic. What is most interesting about this skeleton is that he was buried in a fashion reserved typically for women who were part of the Corded Ware culture. This may point to evidence that, like many Native American cultures that honored gays as shaman, early homo sapiens recognized gays and they had a place of honor. Click here for the full article.

National Organization For Marriage: Always a Time to Hate…

11 Jan

The National Organization For Marriage (NOM) has now decided to offer and post sermons on how to hate the LGBT community and to exclusively focus on us homos.  Really?  Really?  So I guess focusing this last Sunday’s sermon on how to heal a nation after the tragedy in Tucson has to take a back seat to “renounce the modern day evils of Satan,” and force marriage to be one man one woman.  Wow!  Bishop Evans of Rhode Island, you are a real piece of work.  In the wake of eighteen people being shot and six deaths, and you want to focus on denying LGBT people from basic civil rights?  Why not focus on “Thou Shalt Not Kill.”  What is wrong with you and your followers, Bishop Evans?  Click here to see the full article.

Never Been Touched by Another Human

God’s Way (?)

28 Dec

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has now put up bill boards in Tennessee with a picture of two young white people, a blonde woman and a blonde man with the caption: “Man + Woman = Marriage God’s Way.”  And how nice to see so many white faces, just the way god likes it.  Where everyone can be white, hetero, and christian–“God’s Way.”  Shame on the billboard company for taking money to perpetuate hate!  Click here to see the full article on Jeremy’s blog.  Am I the only one that thinks it is very strange that NOM can think of nothing else by us gay folk?  I’m gay and I don’t even spend as much time thinking about being gay.
