Bigot of the Week Award: December 7, Sen. James Inhofe and his “Fellows”

BIgot of the Week

This week a number of U.S. Senators have simultaneously taken one stand against human rights and refused to take another stand in favor of human rights. What ties these bitter white men together is their membership in a secretive faux-Christian sect known as the Fellowship. (It’s also called the Family — they couldn’t decide which word to misappropriate…) This nasty sect, founded in 1935, purports to be a prayer group celebrating the teachings of Jesus. What they really are is the worst of Who Would Jesus Hate hypocrites, pushing homophobia, misogyny, racism, and “traditional values” while secretly supporting the long-term extramarital affairs of Sen. John Ensign (R of course – NV) and former SC Governor Mark Sanford.

The Fellowship has international membership, and its members in Uganda, with support from U.S. members like Scott Lively, have been active sponsors of the viciously anti-gay bill currently working its way through the Ugandan Parliament. Five Republican U.S. Senators who are known members of the Fellowship — Charles Grassley (IA), James Inhofe and Tom Coburn (OK),  Jim DeMint (SC), Mike Enzi (WY) — (have actively resisted calls to condemn the bill. Sen. Inhofe notoriously argued with Rachel Maddow about the content of the bill and its connection to his organization in an interview last March. American “missionary” voices have been instrumental in fanning the flames of homophobia in Uganda. The refusal of these men to distance themselves from this potentially lethal legislation is inexcusable.  On the plus side, the nefarious Jim DeMint is leaving the Senate to lead the backwards hate group The Heritage Foundation–only white, heterosexual, homophobes need apply.

Another international manner arose in the Senate this week. Treaty 112-7, a resolution from the U.N. on the rights of people with disabilities came up for a vote. This treaty already ratified by 126 countries, supports equal rights and support for the disabled. Even though it proposes nothing that is not already U.S. law, a core group of U.S. Senators blocked the treaty as “intrusive.” Treaties require a 2/3 majority, so the 61/38 vote failed to pass. All five of the Fellowship Senators voted “nay.” What a nice way to show their KKKristian values.

As a sad coda, retired Sen. Bob Dole appeared in the Senate chambers to support the treaty. I’m hardly a fan of Sen. Dole, but he is a disabled veteran and served for years beside many of the current Senators. They greeted him, slapped him on back, listened to his plea for support for the disabled, and voted against him. What more proof do we need that these nasty, narrow-minded monsters have jumped the legislative shark?

James Lankford Can’t Stop Thinking About Gay Sex

15 May

What is in his closet?

Thank you to my friend and LGBT ally Sara Carmona for inspiring me to write this story.  It seems that our sad old poor old Republican Congressman, James Lankford from Oklahoma can’t stop thinking about gay sex. Yes, apparently James is so terrified of “the gays” that he feels “it is a choice worth being fired for” in Oklahoma.  I wonder when he chose to be straight–if he really is…

Oh you wacky madcaps in Oklahoma.  If it is not Republican Sally Kern calling black people lazy, it is James Lankford dreaming about, oops, I mean thinking about gays. Lankford said:

he not only believes homosexuality is a choice but that he also believes employers should be able to fire an employee simply because they are homosexual.

I guess Lankford can’t be bothered with the strong stand the  American Medical Association, the American Association of Pediatrics, and the American Psychological Association who all agree that homosexuality is not a choice. Yet another bigot on the wrong side of history. It would seem that Oklahoma is not safe for the LGBT community.  Where are we safe?

Policing Sperm as We Police Women’s Eggs

At Least One Smart Voice in Oklahoma

Oh, how I love Constance Johnson the state Senator from Oklahoma.  Sadly, she may be one of the only intelligent voices left in Oklahoma.  Sen. Johnson is proposing a “Spilled Semen” amendment to Oklahoma’s absurd and misogynistic “Personhood Bill.”  Johnson raises the important issue of palpable hypocrisy:

As a woman and a 31-year veteran of the legislative process in Oklahoma, I am increasingly offended by state law trends that solely focus on the female’s role in the reproductive process. With Oklahoma’s new, never-before-experienced Republican majority, we are seeing enactment of more and more measures that adversely affect women and their rights to access safe medical procedures when making reproductive healthcare decisions…

My amendment seeks to draw attention to the absurdity, duplicity and lack of balance inherent in the policies of this state in regard to women. Oklahoma already incarcerates more women than any other place in the world. Under the latest provisions, a woman in Oklahoma may now face additional criminal charges and potential incarceration for biological functions that produce or, in some cases, destroy eggs or embryos, such as a miscarriage. In vitro fertilization, involving the fertilization outside the womb for implantation into the womb, would also potentially represent a violation of the proposed Personhood statute.

Sen. Johnson does a marvelous job of pointing to the disgraceful way American culture punishes and polices women in ways we do not police men.

For that matter, any masturbatory emissions, where the sperm is clearly not seeking an egg, could be termed reckless abandonment. (Legally Blonde)

Yes, I actually just used a quote from Legally Blonde, but it makes perfect sense.  We, as a country, need to take a strong stand here and STOP misogynistic laws like the “Personhood Bill,” and STOP the hate coming from organizations like the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Bigot of the Week Award: September 16, Sally Kern

16 Sep

Bigot of the Week

Well get my smelling salts.  Yes, as hard to believe as it may be, Oklahoma Republican Sally Kern has earned yet another BWA. If she is not going on about how “lazy black people” are, she is going on and on about how homosexuality:

is the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam…It’s something they have to deal with every day.  Fortunately we don’t have to deal with a terrorist attack every day…And you know, every day our young people, adults too, but especially our young people, are bombarded at school, in movies, in music, on TV, in the mall, in magazines, they’re bombarded with ‘homosexuality is normal and natural.’ It’s something they have to deal with every day. Fortunately we don’t have to deal with a terrorist attack every day, and that’s what I mean.

Yes, I think her statements certainly earn her another BWA.  Just so that I understand Kern better, it is normal to discriminate and hate and be the cause of people committing suicide because of who they are, but it is not normal to love someone who is the same gender?  My, my, who would Jesus hate?  The real terrorists in our midst are Sally Kern and her ilk.

What is clear to me is that Kern has no clue about history or love and compassion.  I suppose I should feel pity for Kern, and on a certain level I do, but it is hard for me to feel sorry for her because she holds power–power that she misuses to discriminate against already marginalized peoples. She talks about the “moral fiber” of the United States, “I think that it’s also more dangerous because it will tear down the moral fiber of this nation.”  Where is her moral fiber? Where is her social courage? Given her character, one finds it hard to believe that she would have harbored a Jew from the Nazis, or harbored a freed black person during the Civil War. When do the American people wake from their fear and willful ignorance and stop voting people like Sally Kern into office?

Ellen Calls Our Bigot Sally…

29 Apr

Go Ellen

Thanks to my friend who likes to be known as the “voice of the trailer,” for sharing this video of the Ellen Show just after I posted TSM’s Bigot of the Week Award today.  Not only does our poor Sally Kern not have any black friends, but she has not a gay friend to be found either. When not wearing her KKK outfit, Kern is serving as a Republican Senator in Oklahoma, where she takes history lessons from Michele Bachmann.  Click here to see the video of Ellen trying to call Sally Kern.  While there are so many disturbing things about the video, what really concerns me is the absolute LIES Kern reports as facts.  How on earth did she become an elected official. Again I ask, is not the role of elected officials to protect the citizens?

Bigot of the Week Award: April 29

Bigot of the Week

Wow! Talk about an embarrassment of riches this week.  Of course, all of the “birthers” get a dishonorable mention this week, with a special shout out to Orly Taitz and Donald Trump.

Oklahoma’s Republican controlled House of Representatives passed a constitutional amendment eliminating Affirmative Action in state government.  But wait! It gets worse.  Sen. Sally Kern (R) said “blacks” just don’t work as hard as whites:

… minorities earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative.

We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.

I would say that Sen. Sally Kern most certainly earns this week’s BWA.  Click here to read the full article.
