Number 3 Bigot of the Year 2012: GOP Rape Apologists

29 Dec
Number 3 Bigots of 2012

Number 3 Bigots of 2012

There were plenty of examples of the Republican War on Women in 2012, ranging from battles over contraception to the stunning failure to renew the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act. Nothing was quite so vile, however, as the shockingly repeated misogyny regarding rape. No fewer than five candidates for Federal office said something appalling about rape victims, often relating to shutting down a woman’s right to choose.  For a party that consistently demonstrated how much it HATES women, the GOP was determined to own every vagina in the land.

The most famous are Senate wannabes Todd Akin (MO) and Richard Mourdock (IN). Let’s take a quick look at the whole fool’s gallery.

  • “The right approach is to accept this horribly created, in the sense of rape, […] gift of human life and accept what God is giving to you.” Presidential candidate Rick Santorum (PA), Jan. 20
  • “If it’s an honest rape, that individual should go immediately to the emergency room; I would give them a shot of estrogen.” Rep. and Presidential candidate Ron Paul (TX), Feb. 3
  • “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.” Senate candidate Todd Akin (MO), Aug. 20
  • “It was really an issue of the Catholic church being forced to offer those pills if the person came in with an emergency rape.” Senate candidate Linda McMahon (CT), Oct. 15
  • “When life begins with that horrible situation of rape, that is something that God intended to happen.” Senate candidate Richard Mourdock (IN), Oct. 23

Sadly, the media largely overlooked the first two, but Akin’s bizarre comment went viral and sunk his nearly sure thing candidacy. The GOP tried to get him out of the race, but he stayed put. With all their hopes for the Senate evaporating, the GOP leadership stuck by Mourdock. That included another lovely “gift from God” quote from Sen. John Cornyn (TX) and an endorsement from Mitt Romney. Happily for the nation, sensible voters said no to false KKKristianity and blatant misogyny.

Dishonorable mention for misogyny even beyond the GOP standard goes to radio blowhard Rush Limbaugh. Not content to rail against the contraceptive provisions in the Affordable Care Act, he targeted Sandra Fluke, a woman testifying before Congress about the need for contraceptive coverage. Limbaugh called her a slut and raved about contraception in a remarkably ignorant way, even for him. He devoted days of his show to the topic, resulting in a costly backlash as sponsors fled from his toxic spew.

Bigot of the Week Award: July 27, Mike Huckabee and His Fellow Diners…

27 Jul

Bigot of the Week. (Hiiyaa!)

As the Bigoted Ship of Fools sets sail to Chick-Fil-A, we see Mike Huckabee as the captain and Rick Santorum as Cruise Director.  The gaggle of chicken-peckin’ bigots form the ghastly crew eagerly swallowing hate.  Ms. Piggy is NOT PLEASED!

As though it were not bad enough that the bigot Huckabee decided to whore himself out to Chick-Fil-A after he learned that decent people were boycotting the tainted poultry, Rick Santorum felt there was not enough crazy in the seasoning and had to add his voice of hate. Ever since Dan Cathy, the king of the rancid rooster, made his recent remarks regarding the LGBTQ community, the full scope of his company’s toxic toil has come to light. Chick-Fil-A and the Cathy family have donated millions of dollars to companies that are not just anti-equality, but that are registered hate groups. Let them put their money where they will; millions of potential customers will gladly do the same!

Huckabee has called for “Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day” on August 1; Santorum got all man-on-sandwich excited and engaged in premature mastication, tweeting from one of the restaurants earlier this week. It seems likely that the appearance of this putrid poultry pair will put diners off their feed.

Three cheers to the Jim Henson Co. for ending all relations with Chick-Fil-A. Three jeers to the chain for telling staff to pretend that Muppet toys were pulled for “safety concerns.” Cheers also to Boston Mayor Tom Menino, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno, and Philadelphia Councilman James Kenney for questioning how Bigot-Fil-A “values” fit with their cities’ non-discrimination policies. Let’s chop this bigoted chain back down to its original size, the Dwarf House.

Bigot of the Week Award: January 6, Rick Santorum

6 Jan

Bigot of the Week

Congratulations to Iowa’s Republican caucus voters. They’ve just given momentum and credibility to one of the most bigoted presidential campaigns of all time. Rejected Senator Rick Santorum was already infamous for his rabid anti-gay, anti-woman stands. He made nearly 150 campaign stops in Iowa promising to stick by his history and was rewarded with a virtual tie in Tuesday’s vote. While his campaign is still a long-shot, the boost he received from his last-minute surge has provided Santorum with an ongoing platform for his words of hate. He has argued with college students about marriage equality, continuing his irrational comparisons with polygamy. On the O’Reilly Factor, he managed to surprise even that bastion of illogic with his extreme stand, maintaining that as President he would force a Constitutional “one man, one woman” amendment and then work to ensure that all legally performed marriages between same-sex couples were invalidated. It takes some doing to stand out as the most potentially dangerous in this pack of candidates. Rick Santorum earns yet another BWA by doing his best to prove he’s the one.

Am I the only one wondering what is hiding in his “closet?”

Broken Clock Moment for Fox News

16 Oct

Fox (Faux) News

Everyone knows that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Well it looks as though Fox (Faux) News had a broken clock moment with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday last week.  I wonder if this is a sign of the apocalypse?  Wallace took Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum to task on issues of homophobia and hypocrisy, two areas in which Santorum qualifies as an expert.

During the last presidential debate, Santorum tried to argue that the repeal of DADT would have harmful effects on our military:

…ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was the government trying to inject social policy into the military

Wallace replied:

…the end goal of doing away with the policy was that gay soldiers would be on an equal footing with their heterosexual peers.

Wallace scored huge points as a journalist when he used a WWII quote that was used to try and prevent racial integration:

The army is not a sociological laboratory. Experimenting with policy, especially in a time of war, would pose a danger to efficiency, discipline and morale and would result in ultimate defeat.

Of course, Santorum replied, ” that unlike race, sexuality is a choice.”  I wonder when Santorum chose to be heterosexual.  Honestly, as obsessed as this man is with homosexuality, I’m not sure he or Marcus Bachmann are fooling a lot of people, just as our J. Edgar Hoover and his pink flower bathing cap did not really fool those in Washington, even though he managed to persecute a generation of people within the LGBT community.   Click here to see the video and the full story.  I also need to thank my friend and LGBT ally Tim Jung for inspiring me to write this story.

Bigot of the Week Award: September 23, GOP Debate Audiences and Candidates

23 Sep

Bigot of the Week

If you truly want to see the darkest side of humanity, I suggest you watch the GOP Presidential Candidate Debates and observe the audiences. I assure you that you will only be able to stomach a few minutes before plummeting into complete misanthropy. During this week’s debate we heard the GOP audience actually booing gay Soldier Stephen Hill, serving in Iraq, thus earning the audience and candidates the BWA.

Hill asked Rick (the P is silent) Santorum, “Do you plan to circumvent the progress that has been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military.”  Here is where the audience  booed him. Like the previous debate, where the audience cheered for Death, the candidates sat silent–their silence allowing us to, at the very least, interpret social cowardice and at the very worst showing they agreed with their sociopathic audiences.

Santorum’s response would indicate that the candidates are in full alignment with their sociopathic audiences:

Any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. And the fact that they are making it a point to include it as a provision within the military – that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege, I think tries to inject social policy into the military and the military’s job is to defend our country.

I did not realize that being treated as a human being was a “special” privilege. Shame on Santorum, shame on Dr. Ron Paul, the rest of the ship of fools for not calling out bad behavior. Your silence BELLOWS true cowardice!  There is a great article on Towleroad if you would like to read more.

Wednesday Word of the Week, May 18

18 May

The More You Look, The Less You Like.

This week’s word is: CANDIDATE

one of the people competing in an election

Despite the Presidential Primary season being months away, many Republican hopefuls have declared their candidacy, officially and not so much so. Who are these people, anyway?

Herman CAIN

Cain and Abel were the first children of Adam and Eve born after the Fall of Man; Cain killed Abel out of jealousy and was exiled by God

Oops. Not too auspicious there, Herman. Given his low profile, exile seems pretty likely after a primary or two.

NEWT Gingrich

a small animal similar to a lizard that mostly lives in water

At the risk of offending the lizards, small and slimy seems like a good description. He’s also wriggly, given how many times he’s decided not to decide about running.

Mike Huckabee, whose affable demeanor hides the heart of a HUCKSTER

someone who sells things dishonestly or illegally

Ron Paul, whose election would cast a PALL

a sudden numbing dread

on the whole country.

Tim Pawlenty may not be well-know by most Americans, but there are PLENTY

a large amount of something, or a large number of things

of reasons to dislike him.

Mitt ROMNEY

one of an English breed of hardy sheep, having coarse, long wool

He’s certainly hardy, as his constantly resurging candidacy attests; his demeanor is slickly robotic, but his methods are coarse and woolly.

Rick Santorum, a man whose views are so loathsome that his last name was rather vulgarly redefined in a contest.

Donald TRUMP

the suit that players decide will be worth the most in a card game

Heavy on the suit, light on the “worth the most” especially now that it looks like he’s out of the running again. We’ll see what he decides next week…

We also have a quartet of nearly complete unknowns, the DARK HORSE

a political candidate who is not well known but could win unexpectedly

Republicans, with an emphasis on “unexpectedly” for Fred Karger, Gary Johnson, Tom Miller, and Vern Wuensche. Their best chances of winning rest on the fact that their competition is so well known for their odiousness. If they are anything like the rest of the pack, consider them to be the four darkhorsemen of the Apocalypse.

Last but not least, a pair of undecideds, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, whose candidacies would lend a certain festival air to the election but in the end an utterly maddening one. Perhaps they will run together so we can go into Bachmann Palin Overdrive…

Looking at this probable competition, it is easy to see why President Obama’s favorables are rising. We must be vigilant, however, as the last election demonstrated just how absurd and unpredictable the actions of the electorate can be.

The Sanctity of Marriage…

2 Mar

Normal Married Couple

Today marks the anniversary of my nine year marriage to my husband. We have been together for twelve years, and married for nine. I write this article in response to my rage against those that say there is nothing sacred about same sex marriage–that takes more than gall; it takes profound ignorance, fear, and bigotry. As I look at the wonderfully successful heterosexual marriage of Britney Spears and television shows like The Bachelor, where women are treated as objects and these “bachelors” can pick one as if they were at a cafeteria. I am enraged at the hypocrisy of people like Newt Gingrich and all of his successful marriages, opposing marriage equality.  I am enraged at people claiming that my marriage/partnership is anything less than a normal committed union between two loving and compassionate souls. For those that are preaching about the “sanctity of marriage, why don’t you outlaw divorce!

I really hate women, blacks, and gays!

It is further irritating to now hear that John ( I will thwart the American People at every turn) Boehner is consulting with bigots like Rick (The P is silent) Santorum about hiring a special counsel to defend DOMA.  Take action against these bigots here.  Really, Boehner? So instead of creating jobs, or decreasing the rising unemployment rate, you want to attack women, the poor, and the LGBT community.

Frankly, I’m really tired of being treated as a second class citizen, with over 1,100 rights that my heterosexual peers are entitled to that I am not. Again, this is a civil rights issue–not an issue “let’s take a poll and see if people think the LGBT community deserve equal civil rights.”  My husband and I have a MARRIAGE! We love each other, we support each other, we make each other laugh and cry. We are there for each other during extraordinarily difficult times and good times. When I fell off of our roof ten years ago, and Robert thought I was dead, he stood by me and took off work for two weeks to stay with me in the hospital as they tried to put me back together.  When we moved across the country because Georgia had passed such virulent anti-gay laws and I had a horrible time trying to get used living in the Northwest, we stuck together.

Today we celebrate our ninth wedding anniversary and You don’t get to say what we are allowed to have! I hope within my lifetime that the voices of love, compassion, and courage will drown out the nasty ugly voices of hate and bigotry.

Rick Santorum, was that a white hood we saw you wearing?

20 Jan

Rick (the P is silent) Santorum

How on earth did Pennsylvania ever elect former Senator Rick (the P is silent) Santorum?  Is there a population of people he does not hate?  This fun loving, homophobic, misogynistic, lying, hypocritical bigot just put his foot in his mouth again.  This article is from the Huffington Post and shame on them for using right wing language of “pro-life,” rather than being honest and saying anti-choice.  I swear, I think Santorum must have been dressed in his KKK garb when he said:

The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn’t want to answer — is that human life a person under the constitution?” he said. “And Barack Obama says no. Well if that human life is not a person then I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.

Really?  Did you just say that out loud?  Kudos to our President for remaining clam and presidential. Click here to see the full article.
