She’s baaaaaack! After her failed presidential bid and narrow victory to retain her House seat, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R – Wackytown) has been relatively quiet. (Mostly she’s been avoiding questions about campaign improprieties, but that’s another story…) As Minnesota became poised to be the 12th state to approve marriage equality for LGBT couples, however, she surged back into Big Ball of Crazy as she catapulted back into the media in her charm free form. Thanks to my niece Rocky for pointing out her latest rantings for this BWA.
She lamented briefly when her state was the first to reject a one-man-one-woman amendment last November. When the legislature enthusiastically embraced true equality, however, she became (more) unhinged. Calling equality the result of Demonic Powers (oh, those crazy demons!), she charged her listeners to engage in “spiritual warfare” against anyone who dares to suggest that LGBT Americans are legitimate citizens.
because it is one man, one woman – because God said it is. Not because it’s poll tested – because God said it is. And life – not because it’s poll tested, because God stands for life. He made us in his image and likeness. And if we tread too softly on issues, like taking on Islamic jihad, and if we fight too timidly, and if we strive too meekly, then I think we all understand we very easily could come face to face with defeat, and then our nation would in fact pay a great and a lasting price, one that none of us wants to face.
Wow! That’s a whole lot of things to hate in the name of God. Is god’s voice the only voice she hears in her head? She amped up the rhetoric as the bill headed to the Governor’s desk for a promised signature.
The Bible is very clear on this issue. Homosexuality is a sin, and God will punish communities that support it. Sodom and Gomorrah thought they could defy the will of God, and we all know what happened to them. If the governor signs this legislation into law the Minneapolis-St. Paul region will be next.
Bachmann has threatened to leave the state rather than hang around for the inevitable pillars of flame. Rumor has it that her husband, Marcus, will stay behind, and then who will backcomb our Michele’s hair? Perhaps Michele will move to Tennessee and live with another Grand Dame of Hate, Anita Bryant. If the Supreme Court can do the right thing next month, maybe we can get her to leave the country.
Boo. She is the president of wackytown. I wish she would just accept that and stop trying to do anything else but evolve.
Jani, I say this with great sadness, but I actually am not sure she is capable of evolving. I worry she is not capable of a transformative experience. Perhaps this makes me a bad social worker?
Reblogged this on Central Oregon Coast NOW.
Nancy, thank you for reblogging this article. Let us hope she does not move to Oregon!!!
Now, then I would move!
Nancy, you and I would block her at the border! 🙂
Who would have her in their state???
Sadly, most states in the South would welcome her with open arms.
Mrs. Bachmann defines what it means to be so homophobic as to make you insane. If she were to use the bible for every aspect of our daily lives then we would need to sell our daughters to the highest bidder of goats, slit the throat of our first born to prove how much we love that God of love. You can’t take one aspect of the bible as the truth while, at the same time, rejecting other aspects of it as out dated. If you are a Christian the you should only subscribe to the actual words of Jesus and we all know that, through the centuries, men have translated the actual manuscripts and men, of course, are infallible. No, Mrs. Bachmann, you get paid by the Koch boys to promote their homophobic, racist, misogynistic, bigoted diatribe. You get paid by the United States taxpayer to promote your gay husband’s anti gay Pray away the Gay agenda. Theft of our money, theft of the taxpayer’;s money of your district. Your time is up and it’s time to take your bible thumping back to a church of your choice.
David, fantastic comment! I especially love that you call her out on “theft of taxpayer money.” Thank you so much for commenting here!
The irony is that not too many years ago, homophobic ballot measures of the one-man-one-woman ilk were explicitly designed to motivate the hate-voters to the polls. That strategy was always deeply cynical, but it was also effective in electing Republican candidates, so there was a sort of evil-electoral-logic in the strategy.
But now we’ve reached a tipping point in many places, including Minnesota, where the pro-equality voting bloc outnumbers the haters, and progressive candidates are the electoral beneficiaries. And that fact is driving some people mad.
Many of the haters are like Mrs. Bachmann–very fragile emotionally, right on the border between sanity and insanity–and the evidence is mounting that she’s reached a tipping point of her own. She now appears to be in the grip of her apocalyptic delusions (there are some echoes of Jim Jones in her rhetoric), and I am a bit worried for the safety of Marcus and their children.
Jay, great observations. Yes, there used to be great credibility using fear tactics around addressing equal rights for LGBT folk and consequently some awful vicious laws were passed, hence Robert and I moved to Oregon. I do love the Jim Jones comparison:)
The obvious psychological problem for Michele Bachmann is that because she “trusted in God” in devoting her life to a gay man, when she sees gay men marrying each other and being happy together, she understands all the more profoundly that her own marriage is a sham and a charade. And because she has built her career on appealing to anti-gay bigots, there is no exit for her. Additionally, she declares that God is going to act on on Minneapolis/St. Paul because of equality there, but then instead, a potent tornado rips through Oklahoma, which is choc-a-block with anti-gay sentiment and ordinances. It is almost as though God didn’t give a flying fuck about anything Michele Bachmann says. And of course, she is the first one to have that hunch. So it makes her lash out in frustration, because everything she believes is a lie.
Nancy, thank you very much for your comments here. I would also add that she will be forever famous for being on the WRONG side of history and for being a part of why so many LGBT teens in her district committed suicide.
